Put even more simply, from the perspective of the Windows phone enthusiast, nothing has really changed: Microsoft will continue to artificially prop up the platform you love, and you can continue using the devices and maybe even buy new devices in the future. For the rest of the world—and seriously, this is like 99.9 percent of the population now, unfortunately—you can safely continue to ignore Windows phone. As you have always done.

Ballmers letzter Einkauf in seiner Position als Microsoft-Chef war (erheblich) teurer als die 5.4 Milliarden Euro, die an Nokia flossen. Durch Ballmers Re-Organisation, einen Monat vor seiner Rücktrittserklärung (er blieb danach noch fünf weitere Monate im Amt), benötigte Satya Nadella seine ersten zwei Jahre um Microsofts Weichen neu zu stellen (was meiner Meinung nach ganz vielversprechend anläuft).

Die exakten Details, die das „streamlining of smartphone hardware business“ bei Microsoft beschreiben (Business-Kunden, ernsthaft?), sind nicht interessant. Microsoft findet sich mittlerweile in einem Topf mit Blackberry und Amazon Fire.

Ich selbst hatte nie großes Interesse an einem eigenen Windows Phone (obwohl ich drei Telefone, die mir einen ‚Blick über den Tellerrand‘ erlaubten, besitze). Die Lumias boten sich seinerzeit aber sporadisch als zugänglichere Alternative gegenüber Android an.

Diese Zeiten sind nun vorbei.
